Yakumo Fujii was just like any other 16-year-old Japanese high school student. Well, his father did disappear in Tibet four years ago while searching for a legendary race of three-eyed beings, and Yakumo was forced to take a job as a "waitress" in a gay bar to support himself. But that was nothing compared to the strange girl Yakumo literally ran into one day on the way to work. She called herself Pai, and she carried a letter that Yakumo's father wrote just before he died. The note claimed that Pai was the last of the three-eyed race Prof. Fujii had spent his life searching for, a race with the power of eternal youth, the Sanjiyan Unkara.
Later, it involves Hindu mythology with creativity which played a huge role in the main plot.

On a coaching journey in the Bayankala Mountain Range in the Qinghai Province of China, his father Genma and Ranma Saotome belong to the cursed springs at Jusenkyo. They take the physical kind of whatever drowned there hundreds or 1000s of years past every time they touch cold-water when somebody falls into a spring. The hex will revert when exposed until their chilly water exposure to hot-water. While Ranma falls into the springtime of a drowned woman Genma falls to the springtime of a panda.
Upon returning to Japan, the pair settle in Nerima, Tokyo in the dojo of Genma's old friend Soun Tendo, a fellow professional of Musabetsu Kakuto Ryu or "Anything-Goes School" of martial-arts which Genma passed on to Ranma. Soun and Genma concurred years ago that their kids would marry and carry-on the Tendo Dojo. Soun has three teenaged daughters: the somewhat spiteful, martial-arts, the indifferent and selfish Nabiki and the easygoing and polite Kasumi training Akane. Akane, who's Ranma's age, is named for bridal duty by her sisters using the logical thinking that because Ranma is just a guy half of that time period and Akane dislikes guys, they're perfect together. Both Akane and Ranma refuse the betrothal initially, having not been consulted on the conclusion, however they can be usually handled as betrothed and wind up saving or helping each other on some events. They can be generally found in the business of each other and therefore are always claiming in their own hallmark clumsy love-hate mode which is a franchise focus.

He was named after his mother, Asano Ha, who was killed by humans for being a yokai who could see and speak with demons. After his mother's death, Asaha is left with no home and no family. He meets and befriends a demon named Ohachiyo who renames him Mappa Douji (Demon Child), to avoid confusion between his and his mother's similar names, as the kanji could be pronounced both ways. Ohachiyo teaches Mappa Douji many things, and towards the end of the story he gives Mappa Douji the demonic power of reading minds, the beginning of Hao's powerfully and dangerously gifted mind. It is not told in this story, but in the main Shaman King manga, Hao later becomes an onmyōji, which is a hint that Hao's fictional life may be based on the Japanese legend of Abe no Seimei, a famous onmyōji whose mother was also rumoured to be a yokai.
